How did you get where you are today?
I didn't start out in IT. I did a number of jobs including working for a whitewater kayaking company and a psychology book company. In IT, I started on a helpdesk and, before I knew it, I was managing a network and a systems administrator. I took an opportunity to work for our main IT supplier and it went from there.
What are you working on right now?
I'm developing ideas and propositions around real-time working and business efficiency.
Who or what has been the greatest influence on your career to date?
To be fair, there are too many to mention -- although I have to thank my old boss Iain Omnet at ChevronTexaco for having faith (and patience) in the early days of my IT career.
Who in business do you most admire - and why?
Probably James Dyson - innovative ideas, sound principles and great execution. How on earth did he get a nation to be fascinated by a vacuum cleaner? Inspired!
What aspect of your job do you find most satisfying?
Developing ideas with customers, implementing them and seeing the difference.
What has been your most valuable lesson learnt?
Set expectations with everyone, including yourself.
Which are you favourite websites and blogs?
Theregister.co.uk, newscientist.com, gliderpilot.net, weatherjack.co.uk, bloomberg.com, moneyweek.com.... the list is endless.
How do you spend your downtime? Where? With who?
I live in the Cotswolds with my other half, Michelle. When I'm not working, I'm either flying in my glider, out on long walks or researching my next investments...
What lifetime ambition have you yet to achieve?
Becoming world gliding champion and owning an EB28, the Bugatti Veyron of gliders! Owning a business or two would be nice also...
Tell us one thing that most people don't know about you...
I published a book called "The New Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnotism" by Ormond McGill and Paul McKenna. Now look into my eyes...
