"i" highlights

Whilst V6R1 involves a recompile, all new code since V5R1 retains source regardless of whether deleted by client, i5/OS kept it.  IBM Labs completed recompile in less than an hour.

Energy Management improved by intelligent PDU with Active Energy Manager and configurability to power down inactive processors. SAN Integration, a clear statement of direction from IBM, using new IOPless FC Disk and Tape Controllers.  For disk attachment rather than 32 LUNs per IOP/IOA pair is increased to 64 LUNs.  In addition, boot of tape now supported.  Requires P6 and V6R1. DS6000 not supported.  DS4700 or DS4800 supported via VIOS.

Security enhanced through Enhanced Intrusion Detection and software based encryption benefiting over hardware encryption as the data within a DB is encrypted.  Secure Perspective also provides policy based enforced compliance. JavaVM is now being offered with both 32bit and 64bit kernal.

DB2 performance improved through SQL enhancements as well as a full text document search which is FOC. IBM have split Websphere Development Studio for "i" into legacy products and new ILE elements.  Does not affect those customers with WDS, only new purchases. VIOS is included with PowerVM Standard Edition.
